Products that fall into this category are Tumor Necrosis Factor, Alpha Interferon, Beta Interferon, and various other cytokines. These are species specific chemicals or protein messengers produced by cells that have been attacked by a virus.

The disadvantages of this category are that the manufacturing process is extremely expensive, and only a portion of the patients treated respond, and many of those who initially respond relapse after discontinuation.
